Restaurant Review
As I begin to write this review, I have just taken shelter from a dark,
chilly, and rainy night.  Moments before, I walked down the streets of
South Bend under my umbrella, heading for the bus stop.  On my way, I
passed a pleasant little watering hole.  At least, it seemed pleasant
enough while I was outside in the rain, and the people inside were being
entertained by the colorful, flashing jukebox and the baseball game,
warm and dry while downing their beverages.  On such a night, one
cannot exaggerate the comforts of a good tavern or café, where one
might gather with friends and leave one’s woes at the door.

And if one happens to find one’s self in New Carlisle, such a homey and
pleasant atmosphere is to be found at Moser’s Austrian Café, 127 E.
Michigan St.

Austria: the name conjures visions of boomerangs, kangaroos,
digeridoos and oversized cans of Foster’s.  But it shouldn’t, because
that’s
Australia.  Austria is a small, German-speaking Alpine country,
and its claim to fame is Falco singing “Rock Me Amadeus.”  (The more
traditional Austrian style of music is the “oom-pa-pa” band, which you
will hear at Moser’s.)

There is plenty of American-style café food on the menu, but if you show
up for
Mittagessen (lunch), try the bratwurst, which comes with roasted
potatoes, some of the tastiest sauerkraut you’ll ever sample, and your
choice of side dish.
Disregard the other choices, though, and have the homemade soup.  If you’re a meat eater, the
Leberknoedel (liver dumpling) Suppe is delicious.  Cheese lovers must try the Kaspressknoedel Suppe.

I can also highly recommend the reuben, made with delicately sliced and not-too-fatty corned beef, the
delicious sauerkraut, and swirl rye bread.

Abendessen (dinner) choices include Austrian Goulash,
Schlemmerpfandl (a beef, pork, chicken and
mushroom dish) and, on Fridays, all-you-can-eat fish.

Moser’s offers many wines (Austrian, German and otherwise) by the glass and by the bottle, as well as an
assortment of schnapps.  There are Austrian bottles beers, too, but the real star of the show is
bier vom fass
(beer on tap).  The beer of choice at Moser’s is Steigl.  It comes in steins ranging in size from 1/3 liter to 5
liter.  (The 1 liter is perfect for two people to share over lunch.)  Steigl is a pilsner beer somewhat darker and
more flavorful than Heineken, but with a similar taste.

All the desserts at Moser’s are made fresh, and there is usually an assortment of pies, cakes, and more.  The
pumpkin roll is especially worth leaving room for.

Come in from the cold and find yourself at Moser’s café for a unique eating and drinking experience.
Auf
Wiedersehen!
